The firefighter seated in the center rests his fire trumpet, or megaphone, on his knee while the two men standing on either side have their trumpets on cord hanging on their side. The officers used these trumpets to shout orders to firefighters during the chaos of fighting fires. Their prominent display in this photograph emphasizes their importance and symbolism to firemen. The fire companies of which these three men were chief foremen are the Charleston, South Carolina Phoenix Fire Company and Mechanic Fire Company. This portrait was hand-colored, an uncommon practice at the time. The frame surrounding it is part of the image; this print is not in a frame.
